Mitosis
Cell division producing two genetically identical daughter cells. Phases: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase.
Meiosis
Cell division producing four genetically unique haploid gametes. Involves two rounds of division and crossing over.
Natural Selection
Mechanism of evolution where organisms with favorable traits are more likely to survive and reproduce, passing those traits on.
ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate)
The primary energy currency of cells. Energy is released when the terminal phosphate bond is broken (ATP -> ADP + Pi).
Photosynthesis Equation
6CO2 + 6H2O + light energy -> C6H12O6 + 6O2. Occurs in chloroplasts in two stages: light reactions and the Calvin cycle.
Cellular Respiration Equation
C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP. Occurs in three stages: glycolysis, Krebs cycle, oxidative phosphorylation.
DNA Replication
Semi-conservative process where each strand serves as a template. Key enzymes: helicase, primase, DNA polymerase, ligase.
Transcription
Process of copying DNA to mRNA by RNA polymerase. Occurs in the nucleus in eukaryotes.
Translation
Process of building a protein from an mRNA template at the ribosome. tRNA brings amino acids matching mRNA codons.
Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium
p^2 + 2pq + q^2 = 1; p + q = 1. Conditions: large population, no mutation, no migration, random mating, no selection.
