Ecology

The scientific study of interactions among organisms and between organisms and their physical environment.

Ecosystem

A community of living organisms and their nonliving environment interacting as a system through nutrient cycles and energy flows.

Biome

A large-scale community of organisms defined primarily by the dominant vegetation and characterized by adaptations to a particular climate.

Population

A group of individuals of the same species living in the same area at the same time.

Community

All the populations of different species living and interacting in a particular area.

Niche

The role and position a species occupies in its environment, including its habitat, diet, activity patterns, and interactions with other species.

Food Chain

A linear sequence showing how energy and nutrients flow from one organism to the next, from producer to top consumer.

Food Web

A complex network of interconnected food chains in an ecosystem, showing the multiple feeding relationships among organisms.

Trophic Level

A level in a food chain or web defined by the organism's feeding position: producers (level 1), primary consumers (level 2), and so on.

Producer (Autotroph)

An organism that produces its own food from inorganic substances using light energy (photosynthesis) or chemical energy (chemosynthesis).
